ಸುಂದರಕಾಂಡ.
ಅಥ ಚತ್ವಾರಿಂಶಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ

ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾತು ವಚನಂ ತಸ್ಯ ವಾಯುಸೂನೋರ್ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ|
ಉವಾಚ ಆತ್ಮಹಿತಂ ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಸೀತಾ ಸುರಸುತೋಪಮಾ||1||

ಸ|| ವಾಯುಸೂನುಃ ಮಹತ್ಮನಃ ತಸ್ಯ ಆತ್ಮಹಿತಂ ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಸೀತಾ ಸುರಸುತೋಪಮಾ ಉವಾಚ ತು ||

Hearing those words of benefit from the great soul, the son of Vayu, Sita who is like daughter of Suras replied.

ತ್ವಾಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾಪ್ರಿಯವಕ್ತಾರಂ ಸಂಪ್ರ ಹೃಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ವಾನರ|
ಅರ್ಥ ಸಂಜಾತಸಸ್ಯೇವ ವೃಷ್ಟಿಂ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ ವಸುಂಧರಾ||2||
ಯಥಾ ತಂ ಪುರುಷವ್ಯಾಘ್ರಂ ಗಾತ್ರೈಃ ಶೋಕಾಭಿಕರ್ಶಿತೈಃ|
ಸಂಸ್ಪೃಶೇಯಂ ಸಕಾಮಾಹಂ ತಥಾ ಕುರು ದಯಾಂ ಮಯಿ||3||

ಸ|| ತ್ವಾಂ ಪ್ರಿಯವಕ್ತಾರಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಅರ್ಥಸಂಜಾತ ಸಸ್ಯಃ ವಸುಂಧರಾ ವೃಷ್ಟಿಂ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ ಇವ ಸಂಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಯಾಮಿ||ಸ ಕಾಮಂ ಅಹಂ ಶೋಕಕರ್ಶಿಭಿತೈಃ ಗಾತ್ರೈಃ ತಂ ಪುರುಷವ್ಯಾಘ್ರಂ ಯಥಾ ಸಂಸ್ಪೃಶೇಯಂ ತಥಾ ಮಯಿ ದಯಾಮ್ ಕುರು |

' Oh Vanara ! Just as earth feels happy when half grown paddy receives rain , I feel happy after seeing ( hearing) you speaking pleasing words. Act in such a manner that I, the passionate lady emaciated with suffering, can touch the tiger among men with my limbs . Be kind to me'.

ಅಭಿಜ್ಞಾನಂ ಚ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ದದ್ಯಾ ಹರಿಗಣೋತ್ತಮ|
ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ತಾಮಿಷಿಕಾಂ ಕಾಕಸ್ಯ ಕೋಪಾತ್ ಏಕಾಕ್ಷಿ ಶಾತನೀಮ್||4||
ಮನಶ್ಶಿಲಾಯಾಃ ತಿಲಕೋ ಗಂಡಪಾರ್ಶ್ವೇ ನಿವೇಶಿತಃ|
ತ್ವಯಾ ಪ್ರಣಷ್ಟೇ ತಿಲಕೇ ತಂ ಕಿಲ ಸ್ಮರ್ತುಮರ್ಹಸಿ||5||
ಸ ವೀರ್ಯವಾನ್ ಕಥಂ ಸೀತಾಂ ಹೃತಾಂ ಸ ಮನುಮನ್ಯಸೇ|
ವಸಂತೀಂ ರಕ್ಷಸಾಂ ಮಧ್ಯೇ ಮಹೇಂದ್ರ ವರುಣೋಪಮಃ||6||

ಸ|| ಹರಿಗಣೋತ್ತಮ ಕೋಪಾತ್ ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ತಂ ಕಾಕಸ್ಯ ಏಕಾಕ್ಷಿಶಾತನೀಮ್ ಇಷಿಕಾಂ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ಅಭಿಜ್ಞಾನಂ ದದ್ಯಾ ಚ ||ತಿಲಕೇ ಪ್ರಣಷ್ಟೇ ತ್ವಯಾ ಮನಶ್ಶಿಲಯಾಃ ತಿಲಕಃ ಗಣ್ಡಪಾರ್ಶ್ವೇ ನಿವೇಶಿತಃ ಕಿಲ ತಂ ಸ್ಮರ್ತುಂ ಅರ್ಹಸಿ||ವೀರ್ಯವಾನ್ ಮಹೇಂದ್ರವರುಣೋಫಮಃ ಸಃ ಹೃತಾಂ ರಾಕ್ಷಸಾಂ ಮಧ್ಯೇ ವಸಂತೀಂ ಸೀತಾಂ ಕಥಂ ಸಮನುಮನ್ಯಸೇ ||

'Oh Best leader of Vanaras ! Give Rama the token of remembrance where the blade of grass released in anger blinded the crows one eye. When Tilaka got erased you painted a Tilaka with grind stone nearby ! Oh Rama you should remember that. Valiant and comparable to Varuna and Indra, how can Rama stand the Rakshasas who seized Sita and in whose midst Sita is living'.

ಏಷ ಚೂಡಾಮಣಿರ್ದಿವ್ಯೋ ಮಯಾ ಸು ಪರಿರಕ್ಷಿತಃ|
ಏತಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ವ್ಯಸನೇ ತ್ವಾಂ ಇವಾನಘ||7||
ಏಷ ನಿರ್ಯಾತಿತಃ ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ ಮಯಾ ತೇ ವಾರಿಸಂಭವಃ|
ಅತಃ ಪರಂ ನ ಶಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ಜೀವಿತುಂ ಶೋಕಲಾಲಸಾ||8||

ಸ|| ಅನಘ ದಿವ್ಯಃ ಏಷಃ ಚೂಡಾಮಣೀಃ ಮಯಾ ಸುಪರಿರಕ್ಷಿತಃ | ವ್ಯಸನೇಏತಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ತ್ವಾಂ ಇವ ಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಯಾಮಿ||ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ ವಾರಿಸಂಭವಃ ಏಷಃ ನಿರ್ಯಾತಿತಃ ಶೋಕಲಾಲಸಾ ಅತಃ ಪರಂ ಜೀವಿತುಂ ನ ಶಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ||

' Oh Sinless one ! This wonderful Chudamani has been safeguarded by me. In distress seeing this I was happy as though I was seeing you. Oh Glorious one ! Returning this which is born of sea, now engrossed in sorrow it is not possible for me to live'.

ಅಸಹ್ಯಾನಿ ಚ ದುಃಖಾನಿ ವಾಚಶ್ಚ ಹೃದಯಚ್ಛಿದಃ|
ರಾಕ್ಷಸೀನಾಂ ಸುಘೋರಾಣಾಂ ತ್ವತ್ಕೃತೇ ಮರ್ಷಯಾಮ್ಯಹಮ್||9||
ಧಾರಯಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ಮಾಸಂ ತು ಜೀವಿತಂ ಶತ್ರು ಸೂದನ|
ಊರ್ಧ್ವಂ ಮಾಸಾನ್ ನಜೀವಿಷ್ಯೇ ತ್ವಯಾ ಹೀನಾ ನೃಪಾತ್ಮಜ||10||
ಘೋರೋರಾಕ್ಷಸರಾಜೋಽಯಂ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಶ್ಚ ನ ಸುಖಾಮಯಿ|
ತ್ವಾಂ ಚ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ವಿಪದ್ಯಂತಂ ನ ಜೀವೇಯಮಹಂ ಕ್ಷಣಮ್||11||

ಸ|| ಅಹಂ ಅಸಹ್ಯಾನಿ ದುಃಖಾನಿ ಸುಘೋರಾಣಾಂ ರಾಕ್ಷಸೀನಾಂ ಹೃದಯಚ್ಛಿದಃ ವಾಚಶ್ಚ ತ್ವತ್ ಕೃತೇ ಅಹಂ ಮರ್ಷಯಾಮಿ|| ನೃಪಾತ್ಮಜ ಶತ್ರುಸೂದನ ಜೀವಿತಂ ಮಾಸಂ ಧಾರಯಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ | ತ್ವಯಾ ಹೀನಾ ಮಾಸಾನ್ ಊರ್ಧ್ವಂ ನ ಜೀವಿಷ್ಯೇ ||ರಾಕ್ಷಸರಾಜಃ ಘೋರಃ| ಮಯಿ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಃ ಸುಖಾ ನ |ತ್ವಂ ವಿಪದ್ಯಂತಂ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಕ್ಷಣಂ ನ ಜೀವೇಯಂ||

' I am tolerating this unbearable grief, the dreadful heart piercing uttering of these dreadful Rakshasas for your sake. Oh Subduer of enemies, Oh Son of the king ! I am bearing this life for one month. Without you I will not live after this month. The king of Rakshasa is dreadful. His look at me is immoral. I do not wish to live even for a moment after hearing the adversities you faced'.

ವೈದೇಹ್ಯಾ ವಚನಂ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಕರುಣಂ ಸಾಶ್ರುಭಾಷಿತಮ್|
ಅಥಾಬ್ರವೀನ್ ಮಹಾತೇಜಾ ಹನುಮಾನ್ ಮಾರುತಾತ್ಮಜಃ||12||

ಸ|| ಮಹಾತೇಜಾ ಹನುಮಾನ್ ಮಾರುತಾತ್ಮಜಃ ವೈದೇಹ್ಯಾಃ ಕರುಣಂ ಸಾಶ್ರುಭಾಷಿತಮ್ ವಚನಂ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಅಥ ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ ||

Hanuman , the brilliant son of wind god having heard Vaidehi's pitiable words spoken with tears then spoke.

ತ್ವಚ್ಛೋಕವಿಮುಖೋ ರಾಮೋ ದೇವಿ ಸತ್ಯೇನ ತೇ ಶಪೇ|
ರಾಮೇ ದುಃಖಾಭಿಭೂತೇ ತು ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಃ ಪರಿತಪ್ಯತೇ||13||
ಕಥಂಚಿತ್ ಭವತೀ ದೃಷ್ಟಾ ನ ಕಾಲಃ ಪರಿಶೋಚಿತುಮ್|
ಇಮಂ ಮುಹೂರ್ತಂ ದುಃಖಾನಾಂ ಅಂತಂ ದ್ರಕ್ಷ್ಯಸಿ ಭಾಮಿನಿ||14||
ತಾವುಭೌ ಪುರುಷವ್ಯಾಘ್ರೌ ರಾಜಪುತ್ತ್ರಾವರಿಂದಮೌ|
ತ್ವದ್ದರ್ಶನ ಕೃತೋತ್ಸಾಹೌ ಲಂಕಾಂ ಭಸ್ಮೀಕರಿಷ್ಯತಃ||15||

ಸ|| ದೇವಿ ತ್ವತ್ ರಾಮಃ ಶೋಕವಿಮುಖಃ| ಸತ್ಯೇನ ತೇ ಶಪೇ| ರಾಮೇ ದುಃಖಾಭಿಭೂತೇ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮನಃ ಪರಿತಪ್ಯತೇ||ಭಾಮಿನಿ ಕಥಂಚಿತ್ ಭವತೀ ದೃಷ್ಟಾ | ಪರಿಶೋಚಿತುಂ ಕಾಲಃ ನ| ಇಅಮಂ ಮುಹೂರ್ತಂ ದೂಖಾನಾಂ ಅಂತಂ ದ್ರಕ್ಷ್ಯಸಿ ||ತೌ ಉಭೌ ರಾಜಪುತ್ರಾಃ ಅರಿಂದಮೌ ಪುರುಷವ್ಯಾಘ್ರೌ ತ್ವತ್ ದರ್ಶನ ಕೃತೋತ್ಸಾಹೌ ಲಂಕಾಂ ಭಸ್ಮೀ ಕರಿಷ್ಯತಃ||

' Oh Devi ! Out of grief Rama is averse to everything. I swear by the truth. With Rama in deep sorrow Lakshmana too is immersed in sorrow. Oh Lady ! Somehow you have been located. This is not time to sorrow. This moment is the end of all your sorrows. The two tigers among men , crushers of enemies , desirous of seeing you , will reduce Lanka to ashes'.

ಹತ್ವಾತು ಸಮರೇ ಕ್ರೂರಂ ರಾವಣಂ ಸಹಬಾಂಧವಮ್|
ರಾಘವೌ ತ್ವಾ ವಿಶಾಲಾಕ್ಷಿ ಸ್ವಾಂ ಪುರೀಂ ಪ್ರಾಪಯಿಷ್ಯತಃ||16||
ಯತ್ತು ರಾಮೋ ವಿಜಾನೀಯಾತ್ ಅಭಿಜ್ಞಾನಮನಿಂದಿತೇ|
ಪ್ರೀತಿಸಂಜನನಂ ತಸ್ಯ ಭೂಯಸ್ತ್ವಂ ದಾತುಮರ್ಹಸಿ||17||

ಸ|| ವಿಶಾಲಾಕ್ಷಿ ಸಹ ಬಾಂಧವಂ ಕ್ರೂರಂ ರಾವಣಂ ಸಮರೇ ಹತ್ವಾ ರಾಘವೌ ತ್ವಾಂ ಸ್ವಾಂ ಪುರೀಂ ಪ್ರತಿ ಪ್ರಾಪಯಿಷ್ಯತಃ||ಅನಿಂದಿತೇ ರಾಮಃ ಯತ್ ಅಭಿಜ್ಞಾನಂ ವಿಜಾನೀಯಾತ್ ತಸ್ಯ ಪ್ರೀತಿ ಸಂಜನನಮ್ ಭೂಯಃ ತ್ವಂ ದಾತುಂ ಅರ್ಹಸಿ||

' Oh Wide eyed lady ! Killing Ravana along with his relatives, Raghava will take you back to his city. Oh Blameless lady ! You may give one more token of remembrance which will make him happy'.

ಸಾಽಬ್ರವೀ ದ್ದತ್ತಮೇವೇತಿ ಮಯಾಽಭಿಜ್ಞಾನ ಮುತ್ತಮಮ್|
ಏತದೇವ ಹಿ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಮತ್ಕೇಶಭೂಷಣಮ್||18||
ಶ್ರದ್ಧೇಯಂ ಹನುಮಾನ್ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ತವ ವೀರ ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ|

ಸ|| ಮಯಾ ಉತ್ತಮಂ ಅಭಿಜ್ಞಾನಂ ದತ್ತಮೇವ ಇತಿ ಸಾ ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ | ವೀರ ಹನುಮಾನ್ ಏತತ್ ಮತ್ಕೇಶಭೂಷಣಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ತವ ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ಶ್ರದ್ಧೇಯಂ ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ ||

She said, 'I have given the best remembrance. Oh Valiant Hanuman seeing this jewel for my hair Rama will be attentive to all your words'.

ಸ ತಂ ಮಣಿವರಂ ಗೃಹ್ಯ ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ ಪ್ಲವಗಸತ್ತಮಃ||19||
ಪ್ರಣಮ್ಯ ಶಿರಸಾ ದೇವೀಂ ಗಮನಾಯೋಪಚಕ್ರಮೇ|

ಸ|| ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ ಸಃ ಪ್ಲವಗಸತ್ತಮಃ ಮಣೀವರಂ ಗೃಹ್ಯ ದೇವೀಂ ಶಿರಸಾ ಪ್ರಣಮ್ಯ ಗಮನಾಯ ಉಪಚಕ್ರಮೇ||

The illustrious Vanara held the ornament and bowing his head offered salutations and got ready to depart.

ತಮುತ್ಪಾತ ಕೃತೋತ್ಸಾಹಮ್ ಅವೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಹರಿಪುಂಗವಮ್||20||
ವರ್ಥಮಾನಂ ಮಹಾವೇಗಂ ಉವಾಚ ಜನಕಾತ್ಮಜಾ|
ಅಶ್ರುಪೂರ್ಣಮುಖೀ ದೀನಾ ಭಾಷ್ಪಗದ್ಗದಯಾ ಗಿರಾ||21||

ಸ|| ಜನಕಾತ್ಮಜಾ ಉತ್ಪಾತಕೃತೋತ್ಸಾಹಂ ವರ್ಧಮಾನಂ ಮಹಾವೇಗಂ ತಂ ಹರಿಪುಂಗವಂ ಆವೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಅಶ್ರುಪೂರ್ಣಮುಖೀ ದೀನಾ ಭಾಷ್ಪಗದ್ಗದಯಾ ಗಿರಾ ಉವಾಚ||

The daughter of Janaka seeing the risen up, eager to leap, quickly growing Hanuman, spoke with eyes filled with tears.

ಹನುಮಾನ್ ಸಿಂಹ ಸಂಕಾಶೌ ಭ್ರಾತರೌ ರಾಮಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೌ|
ಸುಗ್ರೀವಂ ಚ ಸಹಾಮಾತ್ಯಂ ಸರ್ವಾನ್ ಬ್ರೂಯಾ ಹ್ಯನಾಮಯಮ್||22||
ಯಥಾ ಚ ಮಹಾಬಾಹುಃ ಮಾಂ ತಾರಯತಿ ರಾಘವಃ|
ಅಸ್ಮಾದ್ದುಃಖಾಂಬು ಸಂರೋಧಾತ್ ತ್ವಂ ಸಮಾಧಾತು ಮರ್ಹಸಿ||23||
ಇಮಂ ಚ ತೀವ್ರಂ ಮಮ ಶೋಕವೇಗಂ ರಕ್ಷೋಭಿ ರೇಭಿಃ ಪರಿಭರ್ತ್ಸನಂ ಚ|
ಬ್ರೂಯಾಸ್ತು ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ಗತಸ್ಸಮೀಪಂ ಶಿವಶ್ಚ ತೇ sಧ್ವಾಸ್ತು ಸಹರಿಪ್ರವೀರ||24||

ಸ|| ಹನುಮಾನ್ ಭ್ರಾತರೌ ಸಿಂಹಸಂಕಾಶೌ ರಾಮಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೌ ಸಹಾಮಾತ್ಯಂ ಸುಗ್ರೀವಂ ಚ ಸರ್ವಾನ್ ಅನಾಮಯಂ ಬ್ರೂಯಾಃ||ಮಹಾಬಲಃ ಸಃ ರಾಘವಃ ಅಸ್ಮಾತ್ ದುಃಖಾಂಬುಸಂರೋಧಾತ್ (ಮಾಂ) ಯಥಾ ತಾರಯತಿ ತ್ವಂ ಸಮಾಧಾತುಂ ಅರ್ಹಸಿ||ಹರಿಪ್ರವೀರ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ಸಮೀಪಂ ಗತಃ ಮಮ್ ಇಮಂ ತೀವ್ರಂ ಶೋಕವೇಗಂ ಏಭಿಃ ರಕ್ಷೋಭಿಃ ಪರಿಭರ್ತ್ಸ್ಯನಂ ಬ್ರೂಯಾಃ | ತೇ ಅಧ್ವಾ ಶಿವಃ ಅಸ್ತು ||

' Hanuman convey my well-being to the brother Rama and Lakshmana who are like lions, also to Sugriva along with his ministers too. You are capable of making efforts to see the mighty Raghava help me in crossing this ocean of sorrows. Best of Vanaras ! After going near Rama tell him about this intense sorrow and the threats of the Rakshasas. May your journey be happy'.

ಸ ರಾಜಪುತ್ತ್ರ್ಯಾ ಪ್ರತಿವೇದಿತಾರ್ಥಃ ಕಪಿಃ ಕೃತಾರ್ಥಃ ಪರಿಹೃಷ್ಟಚೇತಾಃ|
ಅಲ್ಪಾವಶೇಷಂ ಪ್ರಸಮೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಕಾರ್ಯಂ ದಿಶಂ ಹ್ಯುದೀಚೀಂ ಮನಸಾ ಜಗಾಮ||25||

ಸ|| ಸ ಕಪಿಃ ರಾಜಪುತ್ರ್ಯಾ ಪ್ರತಿವೇದಿತಾರ್ಥಃ ಕೃತಾರ್ಥಃ ಪರಿಹೃಷ್ಟಚೇತಸಃ ಕಾರ್ಯಂ ಅಲ್ಪಾವಶೇಷಂ ಪ್ರಸಮೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಉದೀಚೀಂ ದಿಶಂ ಮನಸಾ ಜಗಾಮ||

Having accomplished the task, and delighted at heart the Vanara understood the message of the princess. Considering the small task left over he mentally reached the northern shores.

ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯೇ
ಚತುರ್ವಿಂಶತ್ ಸಹಸ್ರಿಕಾಯಾಂ ಸಂಹಿತಾಯಾಮ್
ಶ್ರೀಮತ್ಸುಂದರಕಾಂಡೇ ಚತ್ವಾರಿಂಶಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ ||

Thus ends the Sarga forty of Sundarakanda in Ramayana the first ever poem composed in Sanskrit by the first poet sage Valmiki.
